App update

The 2.0.1 release of our app is under review by Apple, and working through its process there. We’re sorry it’s not out yet, and we’re just waiting for Apple to give its thumbs up and then press the big red “release to everyone” button. This release will fix a few lingering issue download and account sync problems.

In this issue

Fandom comes in many forms: young and old, veteran and newcomer, literary and graphical. We like to celebrate all forms, as you can tell from our archives. When managing editor Brittany Shoot discovered Winkie Con, the festival devoted to all things Wizard of Oz related, she trekked from San Francisco to San Diego on a magic air conveyence to attend.

We Found a Rainbow Highway at a hotel that leads to the living heart of Oz and that fosters community, love, and commitment. Outside of her main story, Brittany shares two stores from Other Lands of Oz about a wickedly good impression and a friendship formed between a little person and her young castmate.

Next, we go down under (unless you live down there, then we’re the wrong side up) with New Zealand’s Naomi Arnold, who describes a plan that is Retweeting New Zealand. She and her compatriots are engaged in a relatively bloodthirsty campaign to restore native fauna to the country. There’s a long road ahead populated by possums and stoats and cats — oh my!

Finally, Tate Williams goes back in time and deep under water as he visits Washed Away. In pursuit of reliable and clean water, Boston ran roughshod over rural residents and flooded towns. Some houses and a church steeple were picked up and carried away (though not by a tornado). Many decades later, the displaced residents still remember and regularly visit their lost towns.

Year Two Collection

We are rapidly approaching the second anniversary of The Magazine — Issue #53 on October 9 — and we plan to announce pre-orders for our Year Two book, celebrating the stories that tickled people’s mental palates the most in the last year. The Year One book was a delight to produce, and exhausting. We learned a lot, especially how to streamline.

The Year Two book will be essentially identical: a 216-page hardcover book, with full-color interior and dust jacket, that will feature about 25 stories. (Because of the high cost of international shipping, we are looking into print-on-demand hardcover and paperback alternatives for readers outside the US.)

The first time around, we ran a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign because we weren’t sure of the level of interest and whether we could meet goals. This time, we are almost certain to run the campaign on this site. We’ll set a quantity of books and a total dollar figure, and if either is reached we’ll produce the book! We’ll announce news soon through our mailing list, Twitter account, and future editor’s notes.

Also, after some delightful experimentation last year about other rewards, it was clear most people just wanted the book. (We still have some limited edition prints of the cover and the butterfly-and-moth illustration available. Contact us if you’re interested.)
